Although,
silver is a precious metal, it's use is not restricted to the
jewellery industry only. Silver has a lot of uses in the industrial
sector and photography too. Jewellery, Industrial uses & photography
account for more than 95% of the usage of silver all over the
world. Silver is used to make electrical circuits mainly due to
it's high conductivity. It is used in soldering because of it's
high melting point, two copper pipes when joined with silver are
less susceptible to corrosion and leakage. Silver is a widely
used material in dentistry because of it's antiseptic properties,
the other two uses of silver which are common is it's uses in
batteries and photography.
Silver is used in the making of artificial rain, in which the
yellowish crystals of Silver Iodide, AgI, are used. AgI is sprayed
into rain bearing clouds to encourage precipitation. AgI is harmless
to plant and animal life. Further more silver is used in the fields
of explosives. And of course, jewellery, silver tableware, which
are works of art, have been popular for hundreds of years.
What
makes silver even more popular is affordability clubbed together
with beauty and design. In fact jewellery and silverware account
for more than one third of the total amount of silver in circulation
today.
