RAISING : The technique of forming a flat sheet of metal over a cast iron T-stake or head, forming and compressing the metal to take a hollow form. This labor-intensive process is the purest form of silversmithing. REFRACTION : Bending of light as it passes from air into a different medium. REPOUSSE : A process used to roughly emboss a metal object from the back or inside with larger punches than those used in chasing. RHOMB : Shape rather like a skewed cube. RIVETS : Rivets are a metallic rod or wire used to unite two or more metal parts. RIVIERE : A long necklace made of a series of set stones, usually diamonds. ROLLING MILL : A cast iron mill with polished or patterned hardened steel rollers that reduce the thickness or impart a texture on metal sheet or wire. ROSARY : A necklace worn around the neck or a string of beads etc. held in the hands, used for counting prayers. ROSETTE : A round ornament resembling the form of a stylized rose. ROUGH : Term used to describe a rock or crystal still in its natural state, before faceting or polishing. |
